About the seminar

Chris will trace the history of Computer Ethics from its conception and the identification of ethical issues in computing in the 1940s to the present day.

The focus in the industry, in politics and for the public is now on the ethics of AI. He will discuss the principal ethical issues in AI, which have grown in importance as the technology has developed. He will consider whether there is such a thing as AI ethics, or just ethics and will review the demand for regulation to address the ethical issues raised.

About the speaker

Chris Rees has been engaged in business and computer ethics since the 1980s, when he led a team deploying expert systems to detect fraud in applications for the privatisation issues of the Thatcher government. He delivered a series of courses on Philosophy in Business, which led to his co-authoring From Principles to Profit – The Art of Moral Management (Duckworth 2006). He took “The Ethics of AI” as his presidential theme when he was President of the BCS in 2018-2019. He continues to research and speak on the issues. Chris is Chairman of the CCS.
