About the seminar For this year’s Film Show we will be concentrating on material about supercomputers built by Cray Research. From the classic C shaped Cray-1 through generations of systems we will see and hear about the technology, applications and people involved with the worlds most powerful computers. Featuring a recently re-discovered interview with founder Seymour Cray and animations from real life applications, we are sure to gain insight into the world of classic high performance computers. About the speaker Clive England worked for Cray Research in the UK for eight years during 1990s as a software support analyst. Working on systems at the UK met office, MOD and academic sites both in the UK and across Europe he was familiar with the full range of systems from that era. As the author of the USENET FAQ on Cray supercomputers and more recently the Cray-History.net website he has built a curated archive about Cray Supercomputers from the original 1975 Cray-1 to more modern systems. Concentrating on the pre-year 2000 systems the archive contains manuals, indexed magazines, sales documents, pictures and personal stories of some of those involved in the building and servicing of Cray Supercomputer systems.
