Overall Progress Summary - Andrew Herbert

Message Groups for FlexiNet - Dave Otway

Dave will report on his work adding support for Message Groups (Replication) to FlexiNet. His talk will review the requirements for the reliable collection, storage and access to persistent data in the management of distributed systems against various replication strategies and multicast protocols. The Reliable Multicast Protocol (RMP) has been selected as the most appropriate for the needs of FlexiNet and FollowMe management. Dave will present his design for adding RMP to FlexiNet and his proposed FlexiNet Message Group API.

Using Run-time Type Information in Automatic Storage Management - Tim Harris
In 'safe' languages such as Java, the type discipline restricts which objects can hold references to which other objects. Tim will describe how he has exploited these restrictions to allow the early recovery of 'garbage' objects, to allow the heap to be managed by different collection algorithms and the associated performance benefits.

1220

FollowMe Project Developments - Will Harwood
The FollowMe project has been producing a steady stream of software deliverables including agent and generic user access packages. These deliverables are available to ANSA sponsors under the agreement between the ANSA and FollowMe Consortia and are available from the sponsor's file server. Will will give an overview of the packages.

ODP Enterprise Viewpoint Work - Peter Linington (University of Kent)
Peter will give a report of current work at the University of Kent expanding and formalising the RM-ODP enterprise language, and developing tools to help the enterprise modeller.

1445

Security Integration - Laurence Jordan

Sponsors will recall Takanori Ugai developed a mobile object security system using FlexiNet. Laurence has taken over responsibility for this code and has been taking it further both in terms of greater integration with FlexiNet itself and additional capabilities. He will discuss making use of SSL in FlexiNet, making SSL work with Mobile Objects and and Access Control framework.

1515

Transactions - Zixhue Wu

Past and present ANSA prototypes have demonstrated the power of reflection to provide flexibility and adaptability in systems. However the challenges of programming metaobjects make the technique difficult to use. In his talk Zixhue will present a simple approach he has evolved to enable complex metaobjects to be built from standard parts.

1600 Declarative Binding for FlexiNet - Peter Bagnall (BT)
Peter (seconded to ANSA from BT) will give a report on his work on the "Blueprint" binder construction system for FlexiNet. Blueprint is a tool which assembles a FlexiNet binder from a hierarchical specification. An empty specification generates a default binder: the programmer can then override as little or as much of the structure to customise the resulting binder. The tool looks for and reports on conflicting constraints.
1630 FlexiNet Changes - Richard Hayton
Richard will describe the improvements to FlexiNet that have been made during the summer to consolidate the work done by other members of the team. In particular he will talk about making names become objects so that simple abstractions can be used for complex features such as smart proxies and message groups.
